The ancient town of Gangai Konda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu is an hour's drive from Chidambram. The great monument at Gangaikondacholapuram, the Second Brihadisvara Gangaikkondacholesvara temple. The temple is 54.86 m high and in arrangement follows its Thanjavur predecessor. The temple is renowned for having the biggest Shivalingam in the Southern part of India. Gangaikonda Cholapuram is regarded as the reproduction of Brihadisvara Temple that was built by Rajaraja Chola, father of Rajendra Chola.

By Air - The nearest airports are Tiruchirapalli (230 km). From Tiruchirapalli, domestic flights can be taken to Chennai which inturn is connected to all the major cities in India and abroad through regular flights.

By Rail - Chidambaram is connected with Tiruchirapalli, Madras, Madurai, Rameswaram, Bangalore and Tirupati.

By Road - Frequent bus services are available to various places in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Pondicherry states from Gangai Konda Cholapuram. There are non-stop bus services and express bus services to major cities like Chennai.

Siruvachur Mathura Kaliaman temple at Siruvachur in Perambalur taluk is one of the most popular shrine in the district. The presiding deity of the temple is known as Sri Mathura Kaliamman. She is one of the forms of Kali. The temple lies at the foot of the Pachamalai Hills and is the most important temple in the district. Sri Mathura Kaliamman, one of the different forms of Goddess Kali, is the main deity worshipped here. The temple is open for public worship only for two days a week - Monday and Friday.

Chettikulam Thandayuthapani Swami Temple

Chettikulam Thandayuthapani Swami TempleThe Ancient Arulmigu Ekambareswar and Thandayutha Pani Swami Temples are situated in Chettikulam Village, Perambalur District. The above temples were built by King Kulasekara Pandian, some 500 years ago. These temples are situated 22 Kms. away from Perambalur and 8 Km west of Alathur gate in Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway (NH-45). These temples reflect the architecture of the early days. The Panguni Uthiram Festival is celebrated in Arulmigu Thandayuthapani temple for 14 days in the month of April every year. The above festival is celebrated in grand manner and various cultural programmes are conducted at that time. The rock outside of Chettikulam Village on the top of which is located Balathandapani. It is an ancient and well-known shrine built by the Chola. There are number of stone inscriptions giving the history of the temple.

Sathanur Fossil Tree

Sathanur Fossil TreeSathanur Fossil Tree is a pre-historic tree, which is about 100,000,000 years old. The tree has a length of 18 m. Similar fossil trees measuring a few meters in length are found along the stream sections near Varagur, Anaipadi, Alundalipur and Saradamangalam.

Ranjankudi Fort

Ranjankudi FortRanjankudi is located 17 Kms north of Perambalur . The Fort was built by Jaginthar under Nawab of Carnatic in the 17th century AD. There are three fortification walls at different heights and the bottom most is the main rampart. The fort contains a palace, residential buildings, underground chambers, mosque and flag mast. The fort was the scene of the battle of Valikondah between the English and Mohammad Ali on one side and Chanda Sahib and the French on the other side in 1751 AD. This fort is under protection of the Archaeological survey of India.

Karaivetti Birds Sanctuary

Karaivetti Birds SanctuaryKaraivetti Bird Sanctuary is located about 35 km to the north of Thanjavur near Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu. The total area of the sanctuary is 454 ha. The peakcongregation takes place in the month of November when over 2.5 lakhs birds arrive in this sanctuary. About 50 species of resident and migratory water birds visit this seasonal lake. The ideal time to visit is during November and February.

Namakkal Fort or the Kottai Fort

Namakkal FortLocated on the western fringes of the district, forms one of the most important tourist attractions of Namakkal. The Namakkal Fort is said to have been built by Ramchandra Nayaka, during the Madurai Nayak regime and is famous for the Sri Narasimhamurti temple. The temples and the images of Gods within the temples were hewn out of the living rock. As they grow naturally out of the living stuff of the earth and are sustained by the power of the rock and hill, these shrines are esteemed higher than the ordinarily built temples. It was the chief source of water supply for the town until water from the Kaveri was brought. There is also an 18 feet tall Hanuman statue carved out of a single stone at the Hanuman Temple.

Approximately 400s.q miles of natural blessings is found profused in this kolli hills. Which is next to the Servarayan. The one and only hill that still has remnants of rain forest in the State. It has two cave temples dedicated to Anandha Sayi and Narasimma Samy to the East and to the west side of the rock. The rock also contain eight holy water springs, Kamalayam is the largest among the eight and goddess Namagiri Amman is adhorred here for religious belief.

Tiruchengode

Arthanareeswarar Temple

111Tiruchengode is 35 km from Namakkal. It is one of the seven Sivasthalams in Kongunadu. The Arthanareeswarar Temple is located on a hill. The presiding deity is depicted as half-male and half-female, vertically to represent Shiva and Parvati worshipped as one form. It is considered one of the oldest temples in this region.
