Namakkal TourismNamakkal district is bounded on the north by Salem district, on the east by Attur Taluk (also spelt as Taluka) of Salem district, Perambalur and Tiruchirappalli districts, on the south by Karur district and on the west by Erode district. Namakkal is a sacred place that contains both charm and history. The region was ruled by successive dynasties of the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas, the Hoysalas Vijayanagar kings and Madurai Nayakas, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and finally, the British. The nearest airport is in Tiruchirapalli (85km).

By Rail:
The nearest major railway station is at Salem (50 km).

By Road:
Namakkal is accessible by road. The nearest cities are Karur - 43km, Salem (50 km), Erode - 50km, Tiruchirapalli - 85 km. Chennai, the capital of the state is 380 km from Namakkal.

Namakkal Fort or the Kottai Fort

Namakkal FortLocated on the western fringes of the district, forms one of the most important tourist attractions of Namakkal. The Namakkal Fort is said to have been built by Ramchandra Nayaka, during the Madurai Nayak regime and is famous for the Sri Narasimhamurti temple. The temples and the images of Gods within the temples were hewn out of the living rock. As they grow naturally out of the living stuff of the earth and are sustained by the power of the rock and hill, these shrines are esteemed higher than the ordinarily built temples. It was the chief source of water supply for the town until water from the Kaveri was brought. There is also an 18 feet tall Hanuman statue carved out of a single stone at the Hanuman Temple.

Namakkal Fort or the Kottai
Arapaleswarar TempleLocated around 45 km from Namakkal town, these are known for their medicinal plants, the Arapaleswarar Temple, the Horticulture Farm, the Herbal Farm, Akasagangai waterfalls and the Telescope House. Approximately 400s.q miles of natural blessings is found profused in this kolli hills. Which is next to the Servarayan. The one and only hill that still has remnants of rain forest in the State. It has two cave temples dedicated to Anandha Sayi and Narasimma Samy to the East and to the west side of the rock. The rock also contain eight holy water springs, Kamalayam is the largest among the eight and goddess Namagiri Amman is adhorred here for religious belief.

Tiruchengode

Arthanareeswarar Temple

111Tiruchengode is 35 km from Namakkal. It is one of the seven Sivasthalams in Kongunadu. The Arthanareeswarar Temple is located on a hill. The presiding deity is depicted as half-male and half-female, vertically to represent Shiva and Parvati worshipped as one form. It is considered one of the oldest temples in this region.
